That time I spoke on the phone with Meryl Streep in The Sirens There 's been like that. I met this American girl who was in Sicily for reasons study. It was in New York, Manhattan, Upper West Side. I met many American girls in my life, and some I've kissed so well. But I never knew anyone who was born and raised in Manhattan, uptown, the kind that you look out and see Central Park, the Dakota, the Guggenheim and so on. Two and a half years ago this stuff was still impress me. Marie Antoinette (era il re), e che nel suo stesso college, il Kenyon, ci aveva studiato anche Paul Newman (questo potrebbe riassumere la storia della mia vita: la gente continua a scambiare il mio nozionismo per intelligenza. A me sta benissimo, anche se mi fa sentire un po' un furfante). Quello che non mi piaceva di lei, invece, era: che aveva sempre in mano il Blackberry, ci digitava sopra continuamente qualche messaggio alla velocità della luce, anche mentre parlava con me, e si interrompeva solo per leggere i messaggi che le arrivavano; parlava proprio come parlano le ragazze nei videoclip di Mtv, diceva "OH. MY. GOD.", diceva "I'm starving" invece di "ho fame", diceva, ma questo ora che ci penso è simpatico, "you scared the shit out of me". E voleva fare l'attrice. Era convinta che sarebbe diventata la nuova... boh, Mandy Moore, forse? Non credo che in questi due anni e mezzo abbia fatto progressi, ogni tanto scrivo il suo nome su IMDB ma non salta fuori niente. Comunque. Sua madre, a parte gli editoriali per il NYT a un certo punto aveva scritto un romanzo best seller, in Italia tradotto da Mondadori, e da cui avevano tratto un film con Rene Zelleweger, William Hurt e Meryl Streep. Un giorno le ho chiesto se sua madre avesse conosciuto la Streep, e lei ridacchiando mi ha risposto che sono tipo la migliore amica l'una dell'altra. Poi, come se nulla fosse, ha aggiunto che Meryl era la sua madrina (godmother). "Vi sentite mai?" le ho chiesto. "Un paio di volte a settimana." Da quel momento, ogni volta che la vedevo parlare al telefono pensavo fosse Meryl. Gesticolavo come un matto e bisbigliavo "is it Meryl?" Ma non era mai Meryl. Era sempre qualcun altro. Così ho cominciato a prenderla in giro. Le dicevo che è inutile andare in giro a dichiarare che Meryl Streep è la tua madrina se poi non puoi dimostrarlo. Le dicevo che allora Marlon Brando he was my godfather (a line that I'm still quite proud, since quite a short comic grafts).
